On Saturday, March 6, the day before brutal actions of Alabama state troopers focused the country's attention on Selma, the Rev. Joseph Ellwanger led 72 white Alabamians in a 12-block march to the Dallas County courthouse in support of the Negro civil rights cause. At the courthouse Pastor Ellwanger read a statement which began, "We as white citizens of Alabama have come to Selma today to tell the nation that there are white people in Alabama who will speak out against the events which have recently occurred in this and neighboring counties and towns."
