Came the Summer

There is something almost chilling about the desolate quiet that follows the last days of the school year: the sudden absence of thousands of people, the silencing of the stereos, and the parade of bicycles and cars reduced to an occasional lonely vehicle.

At first there's a sense of relief - a welcome hush following the hectic rush of final exams and the flurry of graduation rituals and the lump-in-the-throat good-byes.
