Abstract

In my action research study I examine and investigate the impact of daily social  emotional learning routines on elementary school level students engagement. This study is based on the growing consensus of the importance social emotional learning has on student success. As many modern day teachers have found that using formal academic programs to teach students is just not enough. There is a need for a good balance between academic and social emotional learning. This study focuses on how the implementation of daily social emotional learning tasks have on students engagement. Furthermore, academic engagement has been Identified by Frederick et al (2004) on three aspects, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive  which is supported by social emotional learning theories like CASEL.

The purpose of my study is to examine how much do these daily social emotional learning activities Impact students. My hypothesis is that these daily activities implemented  in the classroom  have a positive impact on students engagement  and focus. My study will focus on implementing daily routines such as morning checks, sticker reward system, rotating student leaders, fun friday. The impact will be measured by observing students involvement t, focus, persistence and interest in school work.

Data was collected over a span of 8 weeks using a mixed method approach in a 3rd grade classroom. my qualitative  data includes student observations and teacher reflections. While the quantitative data includes sticker point totals, engagement checklist, and behavior tracking records. Findings from this data indicate a strong positive correlation between the tasks implemented and students engagement in the classroom. My data also concluded that adding strategic daily social emotional tasks to the classroom improved the classroom making it into a positive and productive learning environment.
