Perhaps the most authoritative statement on the attitude of American church people toward racial minority groups, especially the Negro, is to be found in The Protestant Church and the Negro, by Frank Loescher. Although this book was published in 1948 and is now out of print, it still represents to a very large degree the status quo in the church in 1958. Many changes have taken place since that time, but the changes were not in kind but in degree; we stili have with us the kind of prejudice and discrimination that we had then, although we may now have less of it.
