The Rev. Carl A. Gaertner, pastor of Zion Church in Dallas Texas, sent The VANGUARD "a statement on integration in public schools)[sic] published by three hundred Protestant clergymen in the two Dallas newspapers." In doing so, he wrote, "I thought it would interest you to have a copy of this statement as well as to know that all the pastors of white congregations of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and of the National Lutheran Council attached their signatures to this statement ... I find generally that our Christian people are ready to submit themselves to the Word of God also in these matters . . . May the Lord in His mercy help us solve the difficult problems in a Christian way and grant to our Christians a courageous faith in giving leadership to a Christian solution in the areas of race relationships today."
