On Memorable People and Forgettable Words
1984 commencement speaker, Dr. Martin Kretzmann, acknowledged that although people often can remember who presented addresses at previous exercises, they seldom can remember what the speaker said.
Many remember that the class of 1981 heard the Reverend Poul Hartling of Denmark, United States High Commissioner for Refugees, whom the University recognized with an honorary degree (later that year he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace). In his address he urged the University to be involved actively in keeping the problems of refugees before the public.
