Excerpt

"These times, they be a-changing." The idea of change and the way people deal with it, especially the Native Americans, is one of the main themes presented in Leslie Silko's book, Ceremony. Tayo, the main character, is forced to learn and deal with change as he returns from the events of World War II to the traditional Indian way of life on the reservation. The stages of his acceptance and his eventual understanding of change are illustrated through his encounters with several important characters--Ku'oosh, Night Swan, Betonie, and T'seh. Through Tayo's eventual acceptance of change, he is able to recover from his "illness" and ultimately be reintegrated into society.
