When in 1902 we withdrew governmental control over Cuba and they established their own independent government, we had already gained virtual control over the economy of the country. While Cuba was obviously benefitted by the change that took place - a change-over from Spanish rule, through U.S. governmental control for a number of years, to self-government - the benefits were not altogether for the good of that nation as a whole. Much of the economic advantage that resulted from the governmental change was siphoned off by the Batistas and others like them who before their time turned the improved economy of the nation into personal selfish advantage. For decades we stood by, filling our own larder while even the crumbs from our table were gobbled up by the Cuban overlords and the Cuban people themselves largely went hungry.
