Today the NAACP stands at the height of its power and prestige. It now has 388,000 members, compared with 50,000 twenty years ago. last year it spent $1,200,000 in its fight for civil rights. This has been its chief weapon: fighting for increased rights through court action. There is every evidence that some of the "young Turks" in the organization are becoming restive. They want to act now and not wait around for years before Negroes are treated like first-rate citizens. They advocate the "power of passive turbulence" as manifested, for example, by the Freedom Riders.
