Recognizing the relationship between domestic and international oppression of people of color, Cross Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI, declared itself a public sanctuary for Central American refugees.

The September service to inaugurate the sanctuary site also commemorated the 20th Anniversary of the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, where four girls died during the height of the civil rights struggle.
