In 1914 the Austrian Archduke was murdered--and the world went to war! In August 1956 Col. Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal--and nothing happened! There was some sabre-rattling at the beginning, but as of now the whole matter has been handed over to the U. N. Security Council. Some think that is where it will remain, unresolved. At least it hasn't led to war, as it probably would have in 1914, or even in 1939. And the reason is not that we now have a Republican administration rather than a Democratic one as we did then. Then it was national pride, secret alliances, mutual military pacts, and economic security, all of them, or some of them, that ignited the spark that caused men of all continents to claw at each other's throats. But not in 1956! Why not?
