Good Christian people often ask members of the staff of the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America, "What can we do? What can we do to become responsibly involved in the civil rights struggle?" There are many things that can and must be done. A plan that has been in the process of development for a number of years, is what LHRAA has called the Rural Summer Vacation Project. Children from the inner city, mostly from underprivileged homes-Indian American, Negro, Appalachian Mountain, et al-are taken into the homes of "host parents" for one or two weeks in rural, small-town, or suburban communities. Usually two children are taken into a home where there are children of approximately the same age and sex.
