Abstract
(excerpt)
"ASEAN plays a very important role in China's peripheral diplomacy. Not only did the 10 members of ASEAN form a substantial part of the land borders China shared with a total of 14 neighboring states, they also served a litmus test of how well and difficult it is for China to manage relations with its neighboring countries known for its huge economic opportunities, complex border or territorial water disputes, long history of shared culture, ethnic ties and conflict or even wars, deep ideological and political similarities and differences, critical geopolitical significance amplified by outside interference by outside interference, and above all, the rise of regionalization supported by all 10 members of ASEAN.
