Abstract

This essay argues that besides the benefits and burdens usually discussed in relation to elective abortion there are various effects that are less often considered, paradoxically including further decreases in the choices available to women, as well as additional burdens on those who decide to give birth. The key datum upon which we shall deliberate is that sex no longer causes birth. Given the availability of abortion, sexual intercourse can only cause choice. It is choice that causes birth.
