Abstract
This research is about Kevin Day's piece "Solace in the Wind" (2020) for wind ensemble. The theoretical framework for this research is Black music studies. Scholars who have written about Kevin Day's music include Guthrie P. Ramsey Jr. and Doris Evans McGinty. Furthermore, newspapers and magazines of recent years have discussed this young composer's music. Although Kevin Day's musical language is tonal and accessible, the composer's music bridges a vast emotional spectrum ranging from "powerful introspection to joyous exuberance". This research investigates "Solace in the Wind" and how harmonic and rhythmic simplicity- perhaps one could even say minimalism- intersect with orchestral colors and an atmosphere of turbulence and quietude.
