Abstract/Excerpt
[Abstract] False confessions are a lot more common than some may realize. This can be detrimental for the suspect as they will have to face years of or a lifetime of consequences based on actions they didn’t do. This can also be dangerous for the community that the offense happened in because the real perpetrator will still live a life of freedom or delay the process of finding the real suspect even though they could be posing a huge threat to those around them. In my paper we will look at a real case from the Netflix documentary “Making a Murderer” and follow 16-year-old Brendan Dassey’s false confession to helping his uncle, Steven Avery, in a case of raping and killing a 25-year old woman.
