Soaring gracefully above the treetops, the majestic bald eagle of North America appears to be a fitting national emblem of the United States. One may wonder, however, about Canada's choice of a seemingly obscure animal, the beaver, as its national symbol. Actually, the beaver has quite a reputation as the "engineer" of the wildlife kingdom. After a close look at the notable characteristics of this amazing animal, it is easy to see why Canada designated the beaver as its national symbol. The remarkable beaver is a unique creature which exists both on land and in water, lives in a close family unit, and greatly affects its surrounding environment with its extraordinary talent as a lumberjack.
