Excerpt
Walking down Union Street on a damp, rainy Monday, I was approached by a car. Inside the car sat a middle aged couple, each about forty-five, looking extremely like lost parents in search of their child. Sure enough, they asked me how to get to Dau Hall. Instantly, I was convinced that my assumption was indeed correct. I told them how to get to their long-awaited destination and went on my way. I began to think of the scene that would take place when they met their son at the dormitory. From the New York license plates on the car, I figured they had not seen each other for quite some time. Because the student was so far away from home, Valparaiso University had to have become more than just a group of buildings fifty miles outside Chicago. School also had to mean more to him that what it meant to those students at universities before 1250.
