Excerpt

Growing up in rural New Jersey for the first 16 years of my life did not prepare me for my first year out of high school. I was part of the typical, middle-class family: mother, father and one younger brother. I had lived in the same old house, had the same room, and slept in the same bed since I was two weeks old. Then I graduated from high school. All my friends had the whole summer off, but I had only one week after graduation to prepare for the next step in my life. Instead of going to college like any other high school graduate, I chose to go on a fourteen-month tour with a Christian rock ministry group. This experience turned out to be the most enjoyable year of my life, but it was a 180 degree turn from the way I had lived.
