My stomach churned as I tried to tell myself that this race was no different from any others that I had been in. I scanned the surroundings, noticing that the pool had eight lanes instead of the typical six and the starting blocks were about two feet off the cold tile pool deck. I was going to be swimming my usual event, the 100 yard butterfly. The pool area was filled with the chatter of excited fans, including nervous parents. But today was different; I was up against the best in the district, and I was only fourteen. I was going to be competing in my first sectional swim meet, and I was scared to death. Jamie, the only other girl from my team that was swimming the same event, tried to get me to relax. She was the stronger swimmer, but this did not bother me, for I looked for advice from her on how I could improve.
