The Rev. Modestus Wirtner's (1904) list of western Pennsylvania Hemiptera remains as the only useful general account of this group for the state. Earlier, Rathvon (1869) had published a short list of species from Lancaster County, but because the identity of species referred to cannot be established, his list has limited value.
