About This Journal
The Lighter is an award-winning university journal of literature and art that welcomes submissions from all undergraduate, graduate, and law students of Valparaiso University in any kind of prose, poetry, or visual art. Started in 1954, The Lighter represents a community of people interested in creating and discussing art, what art is and how we evaluate it. Every semester we evaluate our submissions by selection committees made of Valparaiso University students who read and vote on the submissions. The journal is then created by the Lighter staff and we release an issue every semester. From submission to design, the Lighter is a proudly student-run journal.
Our students write fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry in both strict form as well as free and blank verse, drawings, paintings, graphic design, and photographs.
At the end of every semester, the Lighter sponsors a coffeehouse which acts as a night of community in the arts with readings of prose and poetry, displays of visual art, debuts of short films, as well as coffee and snacks. Our coffeehouses act as the release party for our issue each semester.
We have been recognized by the Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) in categories as wide-ranging as free-verse poetry, rhymed poetry, photographic illustration, hand-drawn illustration, cover design, overall design, best single issue, and literary magazine of the year in 1993, 2010, and 2011.
