The Lutheran Institute on Race Relations was first held within the circles of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Valparaiso University first hosted the Institute in 1950; the first institute of its kind on the growing campus and the fifth of its kind within the LCMS.

The purposes of the Institute were: 1. To examine what God has to say to us in the Bible on race relations. 2. To help develop attitudes and practices consistent with Scripture and facts. 3. To encourage individuals and churches to be a helpful influence in solving the American race problem, both in the church and in society. 4. To develop and supply materials for an education program.
