Abstract

In order to optimize parking at Valparaiso University, it is useful to determine parking lot occupancy and its correlation with building usage. To do so, the usage of several parking lots was analyzed and compared to the number of students in certain buildings throughout the day. This data was segregated by parking class (staff/commuter) and building usage (number of students in classes in that building). Video footage of parking lots was also used to track parking throughout the day. Both parking lot data and video footage helped identify the lots that were close to or had reached capacity. Overall, this data was used to develop a model that will aid the University in future parking planning. This research was conducted in the Fall of 2019 with approximately two weeks of data collection.

Since Olivia Grossen is a Civil Engineering major, and is interested in Transportation Engineering, she decided to look into parking research. Olivia is also a commuter who has experienced Valparaiso University's parking firsthand. Knowing that this was an interesting research topic that could help with future parking planning, Olivia decided to research campus parking.
