Abstract

7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl is an Unnatural Fluorescent Amino Acid (UFAA). UFAAs are important tools that allow biochemists to visualize proteins in living cells. The addition of an Unnatural Fluorescent Amino Acid makes any normally transparent proteins to glow in the dark. The synthesis of 7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl involved nucleophilic addition coupling reaction and deprotection of the initial Boc group. With the attempt of the coupling reaction, the product was verified as our desired product.

Biographical Information about Author(s)

Dana Winkle is a rising junior at Valparaiso University. She is a double major in Chemistry and Secondary Education while minoring in Mathematics. She is a MSEED scholar and a current member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Kappa Delta Pi. Her future goals are to teach in a low income high school, get her masters in Education Administration and Supervision, and hopefully become a principle. She then would like to pursue a position at the head of the Education Department of the Nation. She became interested in this project because she enjoys synthesizing organic molecules.
