When Rev. Brian (Red) Burchfield went to South Africa, he believed he and his co-pastor/wife Susan were missionaries to that racially-divided nation. Now, however, he understands that he was meant all along to be a missionary to the U.S. Arriving in Cape Town last January to serve several, small congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa (ELCSA), Burchfield said they were met with two responses: "a warm and gracious reception and ... an attitude that took for granted that we would be going back to the United States and beginning our real work."
