The release without trial of eight Black Panthers after two years imprisonment; the concerted efforts of the Justice Department to confine the Berrigans and their colleagues; the massive, indiscriminatory arrests in Washington, D.C. of young people (as well as citizens trying to get to work) with an estimated 80 percent of these arrests illegal; the rigid defense of this government action by high officials - these and similar cases can be cited to raise concern over the heavy-handed pattern of law enforcement and government control that may corrode the foundations of a state, and ultimately shackle and destroy people.
